The West
Something I love
about the west is
our open spaces
and big skies.
The often rugged
topography and
sparse vegetation
makes it common
to see dozens of
miles in the distance,
and there’s a comfort
I feel from that.
In fact, on a trip to
Wisconsin in 2010,
I felt claustrophobic
while traveling the
countryside with
trees and buildings
constantly blocking
the line-of-sight.
I’ve also talked
to people from back
east that feel exposed
and uncomfortable
after days
in the west’s open
spaces.
I think this shows
how we are often
the product
of our environment.
As the saying goes,
“It’s a nice place
to visit but I wouldn’t
want to live there.”
Which is how I feel
when thinking of
living most places
I’ve visited outside
the American West.
Yes, I’m a child of
the open spaces,
and I think you can
feel that in the photos
that I take.
